The Oatlands Allotments have provided a vital growing space since 2010, when the original Elmfoot Street site was sold to a housing developer tasked with their relocation. With sixteen plots, each with their own shed, a communal clubhouse and shared

storage, the site welcomes both experienced

 and beginner gardeners from the local community. 

 

The Oatlands allotments connect to the memory of the old Caledonia plots- a green oasis in the densely built Gorbals of the 1960s, later lost to housing development. Both are powerful examples of public land reclamation, rooted not only in environmental need but also in the politics of access to green space and community control over land. By transforming underused areas into productive, low‑carbon growing spaces, they support grassroots efforts to tackle climate change, provide opportunities for local food production, and enhance biodiversity. 

 

The annual membership fee is 10 ounds  per plot/ half plot in addition to Glasgow City Council’s membership fee. To join the waiting list for a plot, email the secretary on oatlands@live.co.uk
