All being well at Hayfield,

apple trees grow in the garden by the car park

in every kind of green,

as tall as our chests.

We like the weather when it’s fresh

when the sun smiles,

leaves blow,

sycamore seeds fall.

When the branches sway, windfall apples drop

to the grass. We bite into them.

The sun is an open palm shining on our heads

the breeze is two hands,

fanning our necks

Offshore windmills stand tall in the sea, far from Glasgow

they make electricity with their long blades

It’s the wind that makes them move-

faster, slower, still.

In Glasgow, it’s windier and rainier than ever.

There wasn’t so much snow this year, not like Aberdeen.

We like the weather when it’s fresh

we walk along the street and up to the river

where fish swim, a flat palm waving through water,

At Hayfield, we planted bulbs of different coloured flowers

in wee pots on the wall to make it look nice.

Flowers.

All different flowers.

They grow tall and birds come out.

Birds nest in the trees.

All different birds.

blue, red-chested, green-winged, long-necked.

We hung feeders with wee nuts for the birds to come.

Yes, we’ll do it again, all being well.

Yes, we’ll do it again, all being well.
