When Matthew Andrew started teaching science at Blackfriars Primary, no one knew he had once been a pupil there- and that he had returned with a secret plan. 

 

As a pupil, he had been the school’s head gardener. Since leaving, he had spent 20 years working in his laboratory developing a single magic bean that could grow an everlasting garden. With the climate changing, fresh food was in need more than ever for the local community, so Mr Andrew had decided it was time to test his magic bean out once and for all.

 

One day, while the school was in assembly, he planted the bean in a pot hidden in the library. By the next morning, the school had transformed into a giant garden, overflowing with fruits and vegetables. It was enough to feed the whole of the Gorbals! 

However one night when the school was closed, a hungry beaver burrowed in, munching his way through the plants’ roots and toward the library—toward the magic bean’s sprout. If he cut through the root, the garden would vanish forever. 

 

Just in time, Ms Murdoch, head of the eco-committee, burst into the school. She had forgotten her phone and returned to pick it up. Spotting the beaver, she quickly scooped him up and carried him outside, unknowingly saving the everlasting garden.

 

The next day, Mr Andrew overheard Ms Murdoch telling another teacher about the beaver. He secured a protective diamond case around the pot so the garden would continue to feed generations to come. His dream had come true, and no one ever knew how it had begun.
